The history of Lignum Vitae
LIGNUM
VITAE.
A name shaped by strength.
The story behind the symbol.
01 / The name
THE
WOOD OF LIFE.
Two words. Centuries of meaning.
Lignum vitae translates from Latin as “wood of life”. Historically associated with medicinal uses, the name belongs to a wood renowned for its weight and toughness.
For our brand, its significance is philosophical: a reminder that strength can be quiet, and that lasting things begin with intention.

02 / Heritage
ROOTED
IN JAMAICA.
An understated connection.
A deeply meaningful one.
The flower of Guaiacum officinale is Jamaica’s national flower. The species is native to Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean, as well as parts of the Americas.
For LIGNUM VITAE, that connection is personal. Heritage lives in the name we carry and the meaning we give to it.
03 / Built to endure
Lignum vitae is heavy enough to sink in water. Its toughness led to practical uses including mallets, pulleys and ships’ propeller-shaft bearings.
That history of usefulness under pressure inspires our outlook. Endurance and resilience are the principles we bring to building the brand.

STRENGTH
CAN STILL BE
BEAUTIFUL.
The tree’s blue flowers offer a delicate contrast to its famously tough wood.
That contrast is at the heart of our identity. Strength and beauty can belong to the same story.

05 / From symbol to brand
MORE THAN
A NAME.
LIGNUM VITAE takes its name from something built to endure. Strength, resilience and beauty became the foundation of our philosophy.
ENDURANCE. RESILIENCE. BEAUTY.
Our inspiration is philosophical; it is not a claim about the physical properties of our apparel.A new expression
